Keeping Tabs
Cambridge has been invaded by a plague of ladybirds this week. The insects originated in Asia and North America, and caused havoc in the States, ruining crops and almost wiping out other forms of insects, but have now spread as far as Cambridge.
Dr Micheal Majerus, who made the discovery, urges anyone who finds a specimen to send it to him with precise details of when and where it was found.
Dr Majerus's caution does not seem to have caused too much worry amongst students, being overshadowed by the announcement that the cherished city centre kebab house is, after much campaining, to remain open. Some 8,000 students past and present, including the actor Stephen Fry and former Conservative Minister Michael Portillo signed the petition to save Gardenia, or 'Gardies' as it is affectionately known.
King's College students however have found a different cause to champion. Their socialist red painted bar, disappeared under magnolia this summer.
Varsity reported that King's Provost Dame Judith Mayhew chose the bar's new colour so as not to intimidate right-wing students. Since the appearance of a gold spray-painted hammer and sickle motif on one of the freshly painted walls Dame Mayhew has yet to comment.
Lastly, the arrival of Tory donor and strip club owner, Peter Stringfellow at the Cambridge Union on Thursday added to the week's excitement. Mr Stringfellow proposed the motion: "This House believes the female of the species is more deadly than the male". Despite being a less than convincing debate, Stringfellow announcing his main argument to be 'I love women'.
