Promising student dies
Alice McGovern, a student due to begin a degree in Chemistry at New College this year, was found dead at the foot of a cliff last Tuesday. Although her body was discovered close to Beachy Head, Britain's most notorious suicide spot, it is not believed that she took her own life.
Drinks offers to end?
The cost of a night out in Oxford is set to increase under a new scheme being introduced to the city. Nightsafe, a council-led initiative, will discourage cheap drinks promotions at weekends in an attempt to reduce binge drinking and alcohol-related violent crime.
Load of old cobbles
Cobblestones in Radcliffe Square are due to be repaired at a cost of £350,000, but plans have been placed on hold until a contractor can be found. City Councillor representing Carfax, Paul Sargent, said: "The university must now place high priority on this project".
Trouble in Keble bar
Two old boys from Keble College had to be escorted from the College grounds last Saturday night after allegedly harassing three female freshers.
The old boys had returned to the college for a rugby match between the former students and the current Keble team.
Sick as a parrot
Soaring numbers of ring-necked parakeets in Britain will be of serious concern by 2010, according to Oxford University's Zoology Department. The proliferation could harm local ecosystems, as Dr Andrew Gosler explained: "Because the birds are quite aggressive, they are likely to compete successfully against other species like starlings, which are already in decline."
