The science of the sandwich

By Laura Gordon

Recent research by an Oxford scientist has proved that not only are sandwiches tasty and convenient, they can be performance enhancing too.

Dr John Stanley, a tutor at Trinity College, carried out the research with the aim of extending nutritional technology used in sport and medicine into everyday life.

The result was a list of fillings that help the body deal with a variety of situations. The sandwich he suggests as being the most useful for Oxford students suffering from essay crises consists of chicken tikka with mango salsa - the protein in the chicken and the vitamins in the mango help the body to remain alert .

Sandwiches containing oily fish, such as salmon, could also help those working late.

Chicken tikka with mango salsa is best in an essay crisis, with apple and peanut butter helping with sports events, says Dr Stanley.

A toasted chocolate banana sandwich is best for a hangover, according to the research.
