Students right behind Azim
Oxford students are mobilising in defence of Azim Ansari, the Afghan refugee student facing deportation.
An action campaign has been set up and a motion in support of Ansari, an Engineering student at St John's College, has been passed unanimously by the Student Union council.
A campaign based at The Queen's College has recently teamed up with students in support of Azim to create a University-wide 'Keep Azim in Oxford' group, aiming to "stimulate interest at student, local and national level".
Tom Siddiqui from the group says an agressive plan of action including a candle-lit vigil outside St John's, petition stands in colleges and JCR motions in support of Ansari.
Key university figures will also be petitioned for their support.
In light of the efforts being made on his behalf, Azim has expressed the hope that "this huge support can change the Home Secretary's opinion."
