At home, with the NHS in crisis, Home Office policy on asylum seekers being challenged by the media and the safety of Britain's railways being called into question once more; an amendment to allow regulated fox hunting was hotly debated and voted down in the Commons while a White Paper was being prepared that could see smoking banned in all enclosed public places.

Paula Radcliffe was rehabiliated by the media as they rushed to re-christen her 'Golden Girl' after her victory in the New York Marathon.
