Wadham student returns home after drunken fall

By Sian Davies

Jonny Letham, the first year Wadham student who was hospitalised after he fell off a roof, was discharged from hospital on Friday. The physicist has returned to his hometown Perth after doctors ordered him to spend some time recuperating, but he plans to return to Oxford within a week. It was rumoured that Letham had sustained a minor brain haemorrhage, but one of his friends, who wished to remain anonymous, said that he did not believe this was true.

“I spoke to his father about how he was doing, and he didn’t mention it. He said that Jonny didn’t break anything. “He had concussion, really awful concussion, and some breathing difficulties. He’s getting better slowly and he’ll hopefully be back by next week.” Letham is, however, annoyed at the national press attention that his case received. The incident was reported in, amongst others, Scottish national papers The Daily Record and The Scotsman, and in The Times.

“He’s really embarrassed,” said his friend. “His parents were annoyed because it made it into the Scottish news.” Letham fell off the roof after returning from the Studio in the early hours of Wednesday morning. He attempted to leap from a staircase near the JCR to a low-hanging roof, but misjudged the distance and fell 2.5m to the ground.

Last week the college released a statement saying that they “will be looking at the circumstances of this incident,” but declined to comment on whether they planned to make any changes to college security.
