TIMES ARE CHANGING on the Cherwell, with the time-honoured tradition of punting under threat, some believe, from the the pedalo. Magdalen Bridge Boathouse owner, Andrew Howard, has spoken out in defence of his decision to introduce these fibreglass, pedal-powered vessels into his more traditional fleet of punts and rowing boats, following an outcry against the new additions. Oxford University Conservative Association is in turmoil following the disruption of last term's election by a small band of disenchanted OUCA members who interrupted the proceedings and attempted to steal the ballot box. The election was held in the Three Goats' Heads pub, next to the Oxford Union, as the society had been banned from using Union facilities for what one Union source described as "systematic unruly behaviour" involving alleged rude behaviour with Union staff and late payment of bills....

MICHAEL ARIS, husband of Burmese Nobel Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, and Fellow of St. Anthony's College, died of prostate cancer last month, ending an unconventional yet surprisingly strong marriage of 27 years. Aris was always aware that his wife would one day have to return to Myanmar (formerly Burma) due to her family history in order to help her people fight for freedom; Ms Suu Kyi's father was General Aung San, a national hero assassinated in 1947 after winning his country's independence from Britain....

A TELEVISED APPEAL on the BBC's Crimewatch UK programme was made by Metropolitan police on Tuesday night in a bid to catch those responsible for a nail bombing in Brixton on Saturday, which injured 48. Among the hurt was a 23-month-old boy, who had a four-inch nail successfully extracted from his head.
