OUSF Elections

The first elections for the President and Executive Committee of the Oxford University Sports Federation will be held on Thursday of First week in Oriel. This will coincide with the inaugural meeting of the Sports Federation, the body set up to administrate University sport.

This is obviously an important development for Oxford sport, as is explained by Jonathan Rose, the OUSF co-ordinator:

"The people to be elected will play a key part in deciding the way that sport in Oxford develops in years to come. The President will work full-time for OUSF for one year, representing Oxford Sport to the outside world, and as the voice of sport within the University."

The candidates for president are Serena Gosling of St Catherine's, the president of OU Women's Hockey Club, Laura Mason (St Hilda's), president of OU Women's Waterpolo Club, and Chris Morris (St Edmund Hall) a member of the Fencing team.

Three of the eight places on the Executive also remain open for nominations, and will remain so until the meeting.

Croquet

The University Croquet Club is holding a demonstration match, on Sunday 25th April at 2.15pm in the Parks. All are welcome to come and see how croquet should be played, and also have a go. Directions to the OUCC lawns will be posted from the entrance opposite Keble Road.

Coaching sessions, free to all university members, take place on Tuesdays from 5 to 6pm, and are repeated on Thursdays. The sessions run from First to Fourth week, and are designed to transform the complete novice into a competent player. For further information, contact Nicholas Farhi at St John's.

Hockey

Oxford and Cambridge hockey players met in Milton Keynes at the end of last term for the 99th Varsity Match. The Cambridge men began their match in confident form, forcing Oxford into errors to take the lead, an advantage sustained until half-time, when the light blues seemed in control of the match, with the score standing at 2-0. Oxford, however, came back into the game in the second half, taking command and putting the pressure onto the Cambridge defence, actions rewarded by Tim Johnson's 53rd minute goal. The Tabs held out until just two minutes before time, when Mark Darbon scored the equalising goal.

Oxford's women had less luck in their match, as umpiring decisions turned the game Cambridge's way, leading to a score of 4-1, and the Tabs' fifth successive victory.
