The truffle shuffle".....need I say any more? The Goonies is the ultimate 80s film. A gang of kids trying to stop their homes from being turned into a golf course, escaped convicts, the search for a pirate's long-lost treasure, Cyndi Lauper, booby traps, a boy's first kiss and the belief that you should never give up on your dreams. The Goonies is as cheesey as they come. It's a classic. The era of Back to the Future, Cocktail, E.T., BIG to name a few. This is the most quotable film after Waynes World, with lines such as:
"Then I put the fake puke over the side and made this awful sound like this.... and then all the people started getting sick and throwing up over each other, and I never felt so bad in my entire life." - Chunk
"Our parents have to do what's right for them, cos its their time up there. But down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket." - Mikey
Over a decade on, this film remains as appealing as when it was first released. Whilst recent films attract audiences with violence, sex, computer graphics and big- name actors, The Goonies is back to basics.
The stereotypical characters are lovable and the stereotyped morals and overwhelming sense of imminent justice are somehow comfortable. This is a charming film, probably the first draft used to write the recipe for feel-good films. As you watch it, you feel safe in the knowledge that everything will work out, and that everyone wil live happily ever after....and not in a drug rehabilitation centre. Spot prepubescent actors Sean Astin (Memphis Belle), Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys, Stand by Me) and Martha Plimpton (Running on Empty, Parenthood).
This film is definitely worth watching once or twice, or even more if you're hardcore. If you haven't seen this film yet, where have you been?
Get it out before it's shown again on Christmas bank holiday. Only in the 80s could someone seriously name a character One-Eyed Willie.
