Stacey Berriman reports. Oxford's campaigners against tuition fees gained an important victory in a vote taken by an OUSU special council on the issue last Friday. The special council, the first in OUSU history, was convened to clarify the position held by OUSU on the issue of student finance.

On Tuesday night 617 Oxford Union members voted in a poll to decide whther smoking should be banned on the ground floor of the institution. The poll was brought by Ashley Peacock, ex-CCC of the Union, after a motion brought to the chamber in 2nd week. Patrick MacKerras, head of Student Action on Smoking and Health (SASH) was the driving force behind the campaign and drummed up a lot of support by canvassing before and during the poll....

OXFORD IS ONE of the dullest universities in the country, according to The Virgin Alternative Guide to British Universities, edited by Piers Dudgeon. The guide offers a "student's eye view of the pubs, the clubs, the buzz", and slates Oxbridge on this score, ranking their social 'scenes' at only 12 out of 20, putting them on a with Essex, Keele and Portsmouth. The universities of Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester achieved full marks....
