Queen's at the front of the track
LAST SUNDAY IFFLEY ROAD was the venue for the Men"s Athletics Cuppers final.
Following two rounds of heats which took place in February, the competition consisted of teams representing Queen"s, Hertford, Trinity, Jesus, Magdalen and Keble.
The Queen"s team got off to a good start in the track programme with their two Blues 400m hurdlers taking the A and B string 400 metre hurdles, whilst Trinity took first and second in the hammer. This set the precedent for the day with Trinity dominating the heavy throws and distance races, and Queen"s doing well in the hurdles, sprints and jumps.
Queen"s came out eventual winners after a closely fought battle with Trinity which was finally decided by the 4x100m and 4x400m relays which Queen"s won emphatically.
There were lots of good performances from other colleges including Oke Odudu"s high jump and hurdles representing Keble, Dave Harding in the javelin for Hertford and Adam Ireland in the triple jump; the ex-captain of OUAC jumping beyond the Blues distance for the 2nd week in succession with a massive 13m95.
The long jump competition was of an especially high standard with the Varsity match record holder Gareth Davies leaping 7.02m for Magdalen. Glyn Chidlow secured a 1,2 for Magdalen with a seasons best of 6.88m, Huw Jenkin jumped 6.58m for Jesus and Alasdair Mackay leapedto 6.35 metres.
The winning team from Queen"s consisted of Christopher Sleeman, Richard Gawthorpe, Peter Harding, OJ Choutka, Jamie Rowbotham, Jim Hancock, Tony Cheales, Rob Lawton, Chris Bowling, Dave Nasralla and John Devoy. Several of these athletes did the maximum quota of 5 events and 2 relays.
