Gently down the stream ... to London
THE NEXT TIME you hear a rower complaining about early mornings or long training periods, tell them about the latest venture by the Hertford rowing club.
Two mixed crews from Hertford will be rowing further than 150km down the Thames from Oxford to London. Setting out at 6am on Monday 19th June, these gluttons for punishment are expected to arrive in London at 10pm the following evening at Furniball rowing club near Hammersmith Bridge. Opting for an overnight stop over en route, they are not aiming to break the Guinness Book of Records' fastest time of 14 hours.
Unsurprisingly this is not the first time that the journey has been attempted by an Oxford University crew. In Hilary term this year Balliol boated the distance and later this term a team from Lady Margaret Hall will endeavour to be the first all female crew to successfully complete the challenge.
Hertford's London-bound trip will be in aid of the Children's Head Injury Trust, an Oxford-based national charity providing advice and practical support for families of children with head injuries. The crew is currently looking for sponsorship. For further details contact the captain, Alec Smith on: 07787-125322 or email: alec.smith@hotmail. com.
