The news this week that Oxford is considering re-introducing the entrance exam will make many people ask why it does not just go the whole hog and move itself, brick-by-brick, a couple of thousand miles west. Not only does it seem extremely likely that Oxford will be able to charge its students according to market forces and indeed its own particular whims, but it looks like it is taking full control of the agenda when it comes to selection. Connections with the government's procedures for marking out the talented are being further eroded, and many will see this as a further step towards severing links with the government's education system in general....


Editorial: and finally . . .

How convenient that a slow news week happens to coincide with the last issue of this term. Obviously this means that editorial space spent discussing the alleged theft of a cuddly toy is not wasted. Whereas obviously in previous weeks such a frivolous waste of column inches would have been unforgivable, now very much like ex-Cherwell editors and obesity (male that is) it is to be expected. The theft of a Womble mascot does open up some very serious questions. However, they have precisely nothing to do with Oxford students, but they are going to be addressed here anyway....
