Nick nicked
The Union's Smoking Ban has continued to prove contentious, after Nick Mason was indicted by a disciplinary committee for allowing the ban to be openly violated during the Union Elections on 2nd March.
Patrick Mackerras, who spearheaded the campaign against smoking in the Union, complained that the former president allowed Members to smoke openly in ground floor rooms on the night of the Election Count, in breach of the non-smoking rule which has been endorsed by two referendums.
Nick Mason, at the hearing on 25th March, explained how he thought it reasonable that if Members were excluded from upstairs rooms because of the Count, as was the case, then he could overrule the ban.
The Disciplinary Committee rejected this explanation. But they decided not to fine Mason costs, given the number of other charges Mr Mackerras had unsuccessfully brought against him.
