Naughty Girl

I do it at the beginning of every term. This time round it began on Bank Holiday Monday. What am I prattling on about? Cramming of course! Ironically I see the logic in taking collections. They are an indicator of your progress and give you an opportunity to tackle the type of questions that you will face in Finals. One of my tutors rang me at home during the vacation. Muting the television to mask my predilection for the more trashy of American chat shows, I answered the phone to hear his familiar voice. He called me about a reference that I had asked him to write but I distinctly recall him saying something like, "to prepare for your collection remember to look over your essays, read thoroughly and study your lecture notes." I rolled out my staple grunt of acquiescence, "uh huh"....

I was always glad that I didn't have a sister; I was sure she would have been thinner, prettier, more intelligent and more popular than me. I used to imagine how this imaginary evil sister won all the prizes at school, how all the family adored her and how she would smile back at them with glistening teeth and perfect hair. These days, in my maturity (well, post-adolescence), and with more enlightened views on feminism and sisterhood, I am horrified at this past evidence of woman-jealousy; after all, it wasn't simply the fact that she was better than me (I have tolerated and even congratulated the superior talents and achievements of my brother), it was more the fact that she was also a girl. But neither can I say that this lurking monster in me has been totally defeated. And - ok, this is controversial - the issue of women's relations may inspire images ranging from girl groups to cosy Women's Institute lunches. (Or, for men, that point in a night out when the women, for some strange reason and even without much prior warning, all traipse to the toilets.) ...
