Alright on the Nightbus

OUSU HAS LAUNCHED a new nightbus service for all members of Oxford University, after signing a new sponsorship deal with Goldman Sachs. The bus costs £1 per trip and can be called out between 11pm and 2am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. JCRs and colleges also donated generously to the £15,000 project, which will benefit their students.

Jane Blumer, OUSU's Vice President (Women) said: "I am from St Hildas so I was aware of how many people feel threatened when walking home at night, especially in areas such as Cowley and Magdalen Bridge."

The new scheme replaces the bus run by OUSU and Oxford City Council for women, both members of Oxford University and the general public, which was written off in Hilary 1997.

She added that the new scheme has been extended to include men because "women feel more open to attack, but statistically men are more likely to be attacked."

It is hoped that students will not abuse the system, complete with on-board "sick bucket", which is aimed at individuals coming home on their own.

Jane Blumer said: "I don't expect it to be perfect to start with. If there is a huge demand it will make the process more complex and a booking system may be needed. I don't think we could afford a second minibus although that would be brilliant."

The system works by students phoning the bus, which will then pick them up from anywhere in Oxford and drop them off at their chosen destination within the ring road.
