On Tuesday morning Oxford's traditional May Day celebrations began with the choir singing at 6am from the top of Magdalen Tower. There were around three thousand spectators, though for the fourth year in a row revellers were not allowed onto Magdalen Bridge. Inspector Dennis Everndon of Oxford Police commented that the "celebrations in Oxford went smoothly for all involved. It was a good natured and enjoyable morning". He added that "crowds had been considerably less than in previous years"....

Around 70-90% of affected children die of the disease, and the few survivors suffer facial disfigurement, functional impairment and ostracism by their communities. However the disease is preventable, treatable and curable....
