Playing the system?

By Julia Buckley

MUSICIANS AND HACKS from all over the University look set to converge at the weekend, as the Jericho hosts a benefit gig in support of the Campaign to Close Campsfield.

Saturday evening will see bands such as Mary, Gooky Pimp and Neverine in support. Headlining the event will be the up-and-coming Djevara, who have already supported bands such as Bentley Rhythm Ace, Pitchshifter, Kill 2 This and Skindred.

This summer, Djevara play the Reading and Leeds festivals, before kicking off their national tour.

The event is being organised by the OU Labour Club in aid of the Campaign to Close Campsfield, which aims to shut down the Immigration Detention Centre near Oxford, described as "an abomination to human rights.'

Run for private profit as a high security prison and supervised by Home Office immigration officials, Campsfield House contains 200 detainees, for the most part political refugees.

Condemned by a former Chief Inspector of HM Inspectorate of Prisons and the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, the centre can hold the refugees without time limit, charge, or access to legal representation. Amnesty International have claimed that their methods breach internationally recognised human rights.

The gig will start at 7.30 at the Jericho. Tickets, all profits of which go to the Campaign, are available for £3 from designated ticket sellers in each college or by contacting campsfield@hotmail.com.
