Hertford rue judge's decision

Debate raged over an incident involving the First VIII crews of Teddy Hall, St Catz and Hertford, on Saturday of Summer Eights, writes Sharat Dua.

As these three mid-table first division crews came round the gut bend past the first set of boathouses, it became clear that Hertford were closing in on Catz at the same time as the latter drew near to SEH. The race was on between Hertford and Catz to bump first.

As the crews approached the main row of boathouses, the commentator announced 'We are getting unconfirmed reports that Hertford have bumped St Catz,' only, in true Brian Moore style, to shortly contradict himself, suggesting Catz may have bumped Teddy Hall first.

The official verdict was that St Catherine's bumped Teddy Hall first before being caught by Hertford. However, an appeal was launched by the men from Catte Street, with their bowman claiming he felt his boat bump before Teddy Hall connected with Catz.

Unfortunately no impartial witnesses came forward and the result stood. No St Catz representative could be contacted for their views, and disappointment reigned amongst the Hertford supporters, left to reflect on the cruelty of sport. One Bradford City supporter (he should know) insightfully remarked: 'Sport can be so cruel.'
