A load of rubbish
Students at Trinity are currently being recruited to pick up litter following a new initiative. One student a day, at the weekend, will be paid £5 to pick up a litter in an attempt to control the problem at the college.
Students register before 10 am, are given a binbag and must then collect rubbish once in the morning and a further time in the afternoon. Just one person can act as a litter scout each day and they receive the pay on their battels.
Trinity's Dean, Dr. Steve Sheard, established the scheme, which was operational from last weekend. He said that litter grew worse in the summer because of "the college's extensive lawns, and the large numbers of people, both students and the odd tourist who sit out there." The system will only be in place during the summer, and so far people have picked up litter on both Sunday and Saturday. Dr Sheard said that it would take some time for the effects of the scheme to be seen, but that both students had "done well".
There has been a mixed reaction from students, with some commenting that it is not much money to do a fairly unpleasant task. One remarked: "It's a good idea in theory, but I'm not convinced the college will be able to get people to actually get off their backsides and do it."
