Culture vulture flies in
Culture Minister Chris Smith joined parliamentary candidate Gill Kirk in Oxford on Wednesday to meet with the management of the Oxford Playhouse. Oxford is one of several British cities competing to be considered for the European City of Culture and Mr Smith admitted that the Culture Minister would have a key role in deciding between the bids.
Amid questions as to whether a northern city was more likely to be chosen as the British hope Mr. Smith - refusing to be drawn - commented only that 'as well as the winning city, hopefully five or six other strong bids will emerge as centres of culture in the UK'.
