Joe Simpson was this week named as the man to fill the post of Consultant for the bid by Oxford City to become Britain's nominee for the European City of Culture 2008 , writes James Rimmer.
The council justified the estimated total £100,000 cost of the bid by pointing out that the last British winner, Glasgow, in 1990, made a profit of millions of pounds through increased investment as a direct result of winning the competition.
The result of the bid will be announced in early 2003.
