COLLEGES ACROSS THE University are facing possible strike action over unprecedented rent rises. Damian Jenkins, JCR President of St Hugh's, has announced that his JCR is "fighting" a projected 16% rent rise, and that if the College do not back down they "will have no option but to strike". At Wadham, the SU has voted to begin 'Silent Hall' on Friday in response to a mid-year rent rise of 5%, to cover a £135,000 'blip' in College finances....

A NEW OUSU report on inequality between colleges suggests that students' academic experiences across Oxford are so different "that the very nature of Oxford as a university is questionable".

OXFORD UNION PRESIDENT Karen Price is poised to present major Union rule changes to the Society. The alterations should cut the number of words in the rulebook from over 150, 000 to under 50, 000 and make them "more accessible to Union members" whilst "conserving detail where experience has shown it is needed"....

'BUILT WITH BLOOD MONEY'. The poster unveiled by protesters on the Saïd Business School last December summarises their objections to it. Ever since 1996, when Wafic Saïd, the billionaire Syrian businessman, donated £20 million for the creation of the School, allegations that his suspected involvement in arms dealing taint the entire enterprise have never been far from the surface. But as the formal opening approaches next week, after the successful introduction of the MBA programme, the completion of a building lauded by architects, and the high-profile endorsement of Nelson Mandela, it is time to ask two questions: first, is Mr Saïd really that bad? And second, does it really matter who he is, or where the money comes from, as long as it makes Oxford's Business School a success?...
