Clubs crackdown

The Oxford Student has learnt that numerous societies have been ordered to cut down on alcohol levels at social events, as the University attempts to erode its culture of drinking by gaining further control over student clubs.

Clubs and societies will have to sign a restrictive contract before being allowed to use the Oxford University name, agreeing to abide by strict, but as yet unclear, rules. The aim is to reduce events providing free alcohol all night for only the low price of an entrance fee. Proposed rule changes will mean that these will become very risky for clubs to hold. Indeed, they threaten any event involving high levels of alcohol consumption.

The plans, first discussed and reported in these pages last term, now come into effect for all University clubs. Changes to the Regulations & Notes of Guidance book, which contains the rules governing societies, will allow the University to fine those societies that break its disciplinary regulations. This means it could take action against a society for the doings of students who break University rules at one of their events.

Advertising will also be more heavily regulated.
