Demolition Job

On a Sunday afternoon that makes playing cricket in England in April seem so very ridiculous, Oxford ran out comfortable winners over Brunel in the Parks. With greater financial support granted to the six University Cricket Centres of Excellence, and the resultant concentration of talent, games such as this BUSA Halifax Championships clash between the "haves" and "have nots" always run the risk of being rather one-sided. So it proved as Oxford found themselves delayed more by the inclement weather conditions than their opposition from West London....

Sport: Christ Church slam dunked

A rainy Tuesday morning appeared to have a rather adverse affect on the attendance of Christ Church's basketball players, and along with their best player rather selfishly being in Egypt they were left with a fairly depleted squad. However, Christ Church would, at the outset of the game, have been almost grateful for this allowed the inclusion of Oriel's Chris Merrit who happened to be at Iffley for a practice, and who turned out to be the game's best player. Balliol-Worcester on the other hand had a large complement of players and from the initial appearance Christ Church looked like they would be in for a hammering. ...

Sport: Oxford karting in a spin

During 8th Week of Hilary Term and the Easter Vacation, Oxford continued its ambitious journey into the Inter-University Karting Championship. Following a disappointing 29th place in very wet conditions at the opening round at Whilton Mill, the team were looking to stay on the track and drive more quickly. The opening day of this year's women's five-a-side football cuppers produced some terrific matches, not least the tense encounter between two of this season's stronger sides, Brasenose and Wadham.

Sport: Sporting thoughts

"...Mika Hakkinen retires on lap 30 and Heinz-Harold Frentzen leads! This could blow the world championship wide open...the Italian Grand Prix has gone mega!!" Oh how the mighty have fallen. For it was with these immortal words of wisdom that Murray Walker greeted the Hakkinen mistake, which left Frentzen and his Jordan team with a serious shot at the world title. Since that golden Monza day of September 1999, things have gone from bad to worse for the Irish outfit. Frentzen lost the title, finishing third as did the team in the constructor's cup. 2000 was poor, but 2001 was awful, with Frentzen being sacked midway through the season. If it is possible, things are now even worse; Jordan are yet to score any points this season, a worse record than traditional backmarkers Minardi. Talismanic leader, Irishman Eddie Jordan, tries to remain upbeat but even he is beginning to flag. Earlier this week Jordan sacked forty members of his workforce in an attempt to cut costs. It is difficult to see how all these measures are going to change things. ...
