Students in Oxford will be able to tune in to Oxford Student Radio (OSR) this autumn, if the station's plans for broadcasting on FM, which have the backing of OUSU and the Student Broadcast Network, go according to plan.

CONTROVERSY IS BREWING at Oxford University's Conservative Association over the appointment of their Returning Officer. It is claimed by a few senior members, in what their president, Jamie Gardener, describes as "a minority affair", that the election of Emily Wentz was unconstitutional. Wentz is Gardener's girlfriend, and it has been suggested by some senior members of the association that this is the cause of the president's controversial interpretation of the constitution....

LABOUR REGAINED POWER in last Thursday's City Council elections, winning 29 seats out of the total 48 and inflicting losses on both the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party. The victory saw the loss of the Liberal Democrat/Green alliance majority, which had served to end Labour's previous 20-year control of the City Council....


News: Rat-arsed at the Rat Pack?

Guests attending the Union's Rat Pack Party on Saturday have claimed that they were left without advertised drinks after supplies allegedly ran dry an hour and a half before the party was due to end. Teetotallers were also annoyed on finding that organisers had failed to provide non-alcoholic drinks.

Rag week kicked off to a colourful start last Saturday with a parade involving over fifty people walking through the city centre. Raising money for ten charities, both local and national, events will continue throughout the week.

THE STEWARD OF Christ Church, John Harris, has backed down over plans to introduce inclusive charging for college food. JCR President David White estimated that the plan, already in place at several colleges, would have cost students approximately £230 extra per annum.

THE ELECTIONS FOR JCR President at Queens last week were decided by only three quarters of a vote. Stuart Colville lost out to rival first year Stewart Robinson by such a narrow margin due to the vagaries of the single transferable vote system.

CONTRACTORS FROM MERTON College were responsible for widespread disruption to University network connections last week. Careless digging last Wednesday destroyed important cables south of the High Street, resulting in a communications blackout for a large part of the University.

The Treasurer of MedSoc, Sreeram Ramagopalan, has been suspended over what the Society's President called "concerns regarding the financial affairs of the Society".

OVER A HUNDRED Jewish students from Oxford marched for peace at the Israel Solidarity Rally in Trafalgar Square last Monday. A large contingent of Oxford Jewish Society members took part in the demonstration to express their desire for coexistence in the Middle-East.

A STUDENT FROM Trinity was stung by a £170 fine on a sunny day last week for 'losing' a punt. William Wood, a first year student, had taken a break from studies to punt along the Cherwell, and, after stopping for a drink, allowed his punt to drift away downstream.

OUSU HAS JUST released its financial report for the educational year 2000-2001, writes Miklos Gyongy. Compared to 1999-2000, the Student Union had managed to reverse its deficit of over £11k to a profit of nearly £15k. The main reason behind this change in fortune was the "healthy" level of advertising revenue, from which most of OUSU's income derives. ...
