Fine Times Ahead
An anonymous source has alleged that members of the Pembroke College JCR executive are "manipulating JCR funds for their own personal expenses."
The Pembroke undergraduate complained about two motions passed at the JCR meeting held last Sunday. The student herself was not present at the meeting.
The first motion concerned the loss of a microphone, worth £180, belonging to Richard Darbourne, JCR Vice-President. The JCR voted by a large majority to reimburse Darbourne for the cost of the microphone, as it had been lost at a JCR event.
JCR President Josh Kern told the OxStu that the microphone could be financed by a governent grant for JCR events.
The student's second complaint concerned the JCR's payment of fines levied against the executive after their hustings overran by three hours, until 2 am, against the Dean's regulations.
The Dean then fined seven members of the JCR executive: £140 for the President and £40 for the other committee members. A motion was passed by the JCR to enable the executive to pay the fines from JCR funds.
Kern pointed out that the JCR's accounts are available for the scrutiny of members on the notice board in the JCR and explained that the current committee had inherited no money but were now £8000 in credit. He stated: "We examine to a maximum all areas where costs can be cut." Pembroke JCR meetings are now sponsored by Pizza Hut who provide them with free pizza for each meeting in return for advertising.
