Mighty maggots

At least two Brasenose students were horrified to discover maggots in their Hall broccoli on Tuesday night. When they complained and the food was replaced, their new broccoli also contained maggots.

Eleanor Campbell, a second year studying law with French, told the Oxford Student, "At first I couldn't believe it - they were maggots in my broccoli. I shrieked a bit and thought I was going to be sick. They gave us food with maggots in it, took it away and then the food they gave us to replace it had maggots in it as well."

Although the college chef, who had not been cooking that night but was in doing paperwork was "quite upset and apologised profusely", he was unable to offer any explanation, just telling students that food was washed before it was cooked. Campbell has been promised money on her food card by the chef as compensation for the incident.

Campbell said: "I've never heard of this happening before - college food is not this bad normally - hopefully it won't happen again."

Steve Vaz, a fellow Brasenose student who was there when maggots were found, added that while he would be eating in hall again, "I'm checking my food very carefully."

JCR President Laura Hannay could not confirm the rumours as the Oxford Student went to press but said "If it is true then I'd be absolutely horrified. I'd have to talk to the Domestic Bursar to stop it happening again. However the fact that it was maggots, not a fly, suggest suppliers, not college were to blame. "

Neither the chef nor the Domestic Bursar were available for comment as the Oxford Student went to press.
