Chris Patten has been appointed Chancellor following his victory in an election which saw over 8,000 members of Convocation come to Oxford in person to cast their votes.

Patten told the OxStu before the result was announced: "I'm delighted to see so many people here today supporting me." He admitted that Sandi Toksvig, the OUSU-backed candidate, represented some "strong views from the student body".

Some famous faces such as Rowan Atkinson and Ted Heath turned up to register their vote. Lord Hurd, former Foreign Secretary, told the OxStu: "It is important to use your franchise when you have one."

Patten has already had an informal meeting with Will Straw, OUSU President, to discuss issues such as higher education funding, widening participation in Oxford and college inequality.

In the final round of counting Patten received 4,203 votes; 1,720 more than the second placed candidate Lord Bingham of Cornhill.
