Cherbull

By Mary Morgan

The Cherwell came under vicious attack at OUSU Council last Friday, when Sean Sullivan, VP (Finance), spoke out angrily against an article in last week's edition. The paper criticised Sullivan for misrepresenting Oxford students in a speech he made at the NUS conference last month, an accusation which he vehemently denies.

Sullivan had attended the conference officially as an observer from Teddy Hall, not as a delegate from OUSU, which is not itself affiliated to the NUS. Thus, Sullivan maintains, he was acting only in a personal capacity when he spoke against a motion which proposed to give the NUS greater control over student union sabbaticals. He claims that he was standing up for the rights of students to control their own unions, a principle in line with OUSU policy anyway.

Sullivan was particularly angered at being labelled a 'Toryboy' by the paper. He argued that his membership of the Conservative Party bares no relevance to his role as an OUSU executive officer- the reason why he ran as an Independent when he stood for the position.
