NEWS IN BRIEF
'Bling-Bling' has been added to the new edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.
The term, which is used to describe diamonds, jewellery and all forms of ostentatious style, was coined by New Orleans rap family Cash Money Millionaires in the late '90s. It infiltrated the national psyche with a song titled "Bling Bling" by Cash Money artist BG.
Ali G's favourite term is in good company. It is joined by other hip-hop-turned-mainstream terms like "jiggy", "breakbeat", "dope" and "phat" on the online updates of the 20-volume dictionary.
BG commented that he was "surprised that that word has spread like it has." He added: "I just wish that I'd trademarked it, so I'd never have to work again".
Wadham College has announced that their new Warden shall be Sir Neil Chalmers. He will take up the post in October 2004, as J S Flemming, the current Warden, is shortly to retire for health reasons. Sir Neil is currently Director of the Natural History Museum, London and was educated at Magdalen and St John's College, Cambridge. He comes "fifth in a line of most distinguished Wardens over the last sixty years" according to Sub-Warden J Hackney, who will be serving as acting Warden for the duration.
Medics last term were delighted to discover their exam paper had subtly revealed all the correct answers- the multiple choice section of the Pathology assessment given to the second year and typed all the correct answers in lighter ink.
However, the printing error was taken into account in the marking of the paper according to a statement made by the Director of Pre-Clinical Studies. The assessment itself was only a progress check, but the majority of students will be hoping that it marks a new exam precedent.
