Worc. win
Following a disappointing performance in the Mixed Lacrosse Cuppers tournament, Worcester had a lot to prove going in to the League final. Both Worcester and Merton/ Christchurch were fired up for the match, which took place last Monday in the Parks. From the start, the match was closely fought with aggression and spirit from both teams.
An early goal from Simon Spink put Merton/Christchurch ahead, despite Worcester having had more possession of the ball. The skills of Mike Estill and Olivia Finch, both of Worcester, were particularly evident in bringing the ball through the midfield and constantly threatening the Merton/Christchurch defence. Two quick goals put Worcester ahead - the second coming from a particularly spectacular assist from Martin'trucky' Pickup. Merton/Christchurch, however, managed to level the score just before half time with a goal from Lisa Ronz.
At the start of the second half, with everything to play for, there was little separating the teams. Worcester wer certainly dominating possession, but looked vulnerable when Merton/Christchurch stole back the ball and hit them on the break.
Eventually Worcester broke the deadlock with a goal from Martin Stringer putting them ahead. After that, they certainly looked the better team and as the quality of their passing increased, the Merton/Christchurch tackling became more desperate. Worcester completed the win with one final goal - Anthony Bangay, finding himself in space on the right wing, cut in and scored with almost no opposition. As any of the few spectators would agree it was certainly a fine display of determination and passion for the game from both teams.
Next years Cuppers and league mixed lacrosse matches definitely look set to produce some excellent matches.
