Icelandic Prime Minister David Oddsson on Tuesday donated £25,000 to Oxford University on behalf of his government for the development of Icelandic studies writes Tom Rayner.

The contribution was made as Vice Chancellor Sir Colin Lucas welcomed Mr Oddsson to Oxford to give a lecture to assembled guests on why Iceland will remain outside the European Union.

Just days before ten new countries join the EU Mr Oddsson, the longest serving Prime Minister in Europe, discussed the need for Iceland to keep full control of its small fishing-based economy, his government's policy on whaling and his unease about the current controversy surrounding animal testing in Oxford.
