Thames Valley Police have warned students not to jump from Magdalen Bridge in the traditional May Day festivities.

The move follows the new Code of Conduct that has been drawn up, detailing restrictions on post-exam celebrations, as reported by The OxStu last week.

The appeal has been made for the safety of the students themselves, due to fast-flowing currents and sharp debris on the riverbed. Thames Valley Police said: "We're quite sympathetic to the students' desire to celebrate May Day and will not be throwing a wet blanket over the celebrations."

Although alcohol will not be allowed on the bridge this year, nor in other areas of the city centre, the alcohol-free zone will not apply in the High Street. Bins will be provided, into which revellers can deposit alcohol, should they wish to join the crowds on the bridge.

Oxford City Council has also supported the advice of the police, stressing that they are hoping to reduce the chances of accidents.

Several years ago the celebrations lead to a student being paralysed after jumping from the historic bridge. In 1994, 22 people were injured after jumping into the River Cherwell, which had dropped to just four feet in depth.

Stewards and barriers will also be in place in order to act as a further deterrent to anyone planning to take the plunge.

OUSU President, Helena Puig-Larrauri, has advised students to heed the warnings: "I think they are really sensible safety measures... I think most students will be happy with it."

1999 saw the last time May Day fell on a Saturday, when 11,000 revellers gathered on and around Magdalen Bridge.

Last year May morning fell on Thursday, and saw 8,500 attend the celebrations.
