Worcester wipe Lacrosse floor

By Sophie Palmer

The group stages of this year's mixed lacrosse Cuppers provided much friendly rivalry, with ten teams competing for the Cuppers crown.

Notable performances in the group stages included Paul Banford's hat-trick in LMH's 4-0 victory over Trinity.

Osler-Green were unfortunate not to reach the semi-final stage, with a victory over Trinity and a closely fought match against LMH, which included goals from Kate Cooper and Amanda Salter.

One semi-final place rested on the result of a match between Hertford and Magdalen. New College's 2-0 victory over Keble put them within sight of the semi-finals but their narrow defeat to Hertford left them requiring a Magdalen victory. In the event, Hertford cantered to a 4-0 win with goals from Olivia Zinzan and James Griggs.

The first semi-final saw eventual winners Worcester defeat Catz 3-0.

The second of the semi-finals provided the most drama of the afternoon, with a bad tempered encounter that saw both Queen's and Hertford have a player sent off.

Although two down at half time, Queens started the second half with renewed vigour and were rewarded when Coppel eluded the hitherto miserly Hertford defence. Despite this Hertford scraped through to face Worcester in the final.

The final saw an undefeated Worcester side claim the Cuppers crown with a 4-2 victory over Hertford.

An impressive goal from James Griggs, set up by Amy Hamilton, and a second from Steph Wooler following a intuitive pass from Olivia Zinzan, showed great flair but to no avail.

However Worcester, with goals from Mike Estill and Jan Hobbs came out on top. The consistent performances of sisters Becky and Lottie Waller, combined with strong support from Ollie Middelton and Libby Finch, saw them achieve a well deserved victory.
