an oxford student sustained serious eye injuries in an incident during the early hours of May 1st at the Corpus Christi ball last weekend.

A 33-year-old Said Business School MBA student was allegedly attacked as he celebrated on May Day morning within the grounds of the college. The St John's Ambulance crew in attendance at the ball did not initially judge the casualty's injuries to be serious enough to call the emergency services and the student travelled to hospital by taxi.

The incident occurred at approximately 2am and although the police were called, they were unable to attend. A second man involved in the incident was detained by ball security services but was later released. The incident was investigated by Thames Valley Police on Saturday May 1st and they later arrested a 23-year old American student, Ilya Zarembsky.

The University and Corpus Christi Dean Dr Richard Lofthouse have issued a statement confirming that "an incident took place early on May 1 involving two individuals from outside the college. One of the individuals sustained an eye injury and was taken to hospital. The other individual was arrested by Thames Valley Police, remanded in custody and was later charged."

Police have said Zarembsky has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm. He appeared at Oxford Magistrates' Court on Monday May 3rd and was granted bail to re-appear on May 17th.
