Ex-OUSU President runs for MP
A former OUSU president has been selected as the Labour Party candidate for North Southwark and Bermondsey. Kirsty McNeill led the Students' Union from 2000 to 2001 while at Balliol.
The present MP, Liberal Democrat Simon Hughes, currently holds a majority of 9,632, but it is thought his concentration on running for London mayor may give Ms. McNeill an advantage. Nearly 100 local party members voted her in with a strong majority. If elected to Parliament she would become the constituency's first female MP.
As OUSU President, McNeill was a critic of top-up fees, telling The OxStu in 2000: "Differential top-up fees will go one step further in making education a commodity only the rich can afford."
McNeill was not available for comment.
