Bex Wilkinson will be next year's OUSU Vice President for Women, following an emphatic victory in the election held last Thursday.

Wilkinson, a PPE finalist at St Edmund Hall, won with a convincing victory. She took 486 of the 668 votes cast. The elections had been called following the resignation, owing to ill health, of VP-elect Ros Dampier.

OUSU Returning officer Dan Paskins told The OxStu that he was "delighted with [the turnout] considering that the election... had to be organised in some haste."

He added: "This is the first contested OUSU election for as long as I can remember where the Returning Officer didn't have to discipline anyone."

A central issue to the campaigning had been that of abortion, a source of controversy largely due to the pro-life affiliations of Lucy Underwood, the unsuccessful candidate. She told The OxStu : "I feel that the election campaign succeeded in that it gave a significant number of voters the chance to express their opinion about how OUSU should focus itself".

Wilkinson told The OxStu: "I'm really thrilled to have been elected. I feel like the vote margin gives me a strong mandate to pursue my manifesto pledges and continue OUSU's pro-choice policy".
