Increased spending boosts Oxford

By Sophy Ridge

A substantial increase in university spending has been identified as the main factor helping Oxford extend its lead at the top of the Times Good University Guide.

Whereas Cambridge University averaged £135 spending per student in the three years ending in 2001-02, Oxford University averaged a considerably higher sum of £369.

Spending on facilities exerts a considerable influence, especially as teaching and research, the table's heaviest weighted factors, remain unchanged since last year. Entry standards also remain virtually unchanged, with no movement in the majority of the top ten universities. However, Oxford's lead clearly demonstrates the importance of university spending.

A spokesperson for Oxford University told The OxStu: "Oxford's sustained high spending shows our commitment to providing the optimum student experience, and consolidates our position as the UK's leading university."
