Carnival Road
The Cowley Road Carnival is taking place this Sunday and expects to attract around 15,000 people to the festivities, which will include music, dance, and arts workshops.
The event, whose theme this year is 'water', is the fourth annual carnival on the Cowley Road, but this year for the first time the road will close on Sunday between 8am and 8pm.
The Carnival aims to celebrate and promote Oxfordshire's diversity and depends very much on the support of hundreds of local people and businesses. Matthew Chambers, who is involved in the marketing and fundraising for the event, told The OxStu: "The Carnival is very much rooted in the East Oxford community - that's how it started and that's how it will continue. There will be a wide range of musical groups and artists, including many local performers, and some from as far and wide as Uganda, reflecting the diversity of East Oxford."
Chambers added that the University has supported the event through the Active Community Fund, and he expects volunteer involvement from students. Anna Loughran, a second-year linguist living out on Cowley Road, told The OxStu: "It sounds like a great idea - I'll be going along. It's good to be involved in something that doesn't revolve around the University."
