There is something of an unexpected colour revolution happening at the moment. Everyone has blue in their wardrobe, whether it is that trusty pair of blue jeans or that staple smart blue blazer. But this ultrawearable, ever-popular colour was also the most prevalent on the catwalks showcasing this summer’s new styles.

In amongst the raspberry pinks and fiery oranges, bright sea blue proved to be the colour of the moment with a spectrum of hues from royal, indigo and midnight to shades of sapphire, turquoise and aquamarine. Donna Karen unfurled her cobalt python wrap jacket, whilst Calvin Klein’s marine, teal and clover silk tank dress was reminiscent of calm ocean waves. Continuing the aquatic theme, Michael Kors’ collection was inspired by the Mediterranean Sea.

Celine’s pretty flowing dresses embraced inky indigo whilst Missoni opted for deep petrol shades. Blue is certainly not just a synonym for denim this season. If anything, it means more choice. The bright sea blues and the 1980s-style electric blues that can now be seen on the high street are sporty, vibrant and yet smart, whilst the softer blues are cool yet graceful.

Monsoon’s summer collection includes turquoise tunics, and Accessorize’s ethnic turquoise jewellery can work well with bohemian dressing, where blue hues can be found in sequins, beads and fabric twists. The men’s blue V-neck sweaters at Gap show that this is certainly a trend for boys too. Because blue is such an easy and forgiving shade to wear, it is possible to combine fabrics and textures, and to indulge in embellishments and prints.

There is a blue hue to suit everyone this season, whether your outfit is casual or made for a more festive occasion.
