The Wait Is Over

New Order have always stood out: at times, classed as rock, at times as dance and sometimes, rather lazily, as “electro-indie”. They cannot be pop-pigeonholed. Their rock has always had a less gritty, more modern sound, although they’ve never skimped on their trademark insistent bass, so frequently unnoticed.

It’s Sunday night, and Nine Black Alps are deafening the Brookes audience with their assertive blend of post-grunge punk. The amps are turned up to eleven, and, throwing out songs of such force as ‘Not Everyone’, it’s clear that this is a band with a big future.

Just as ‘emotionally-charged’ music’s star begins to fade, a troupe of warriors appear on the horizon, equipped with the magic elixir for the modern scene. At least that’s what they believe.

A highly accomplished debut from Deep Southerners, The Features (and one would expect no less from a band who have been playing together since 1993), Exhibit A presents a giddy half hour of swirling hillbilly pop, with a sinister edge to a style that would make tracks like ‘Exorcising Demons’ and ‘Harder to Ignore’ fit nicely on the soundtrack to a Tim Burton movie.
