Oxford University has postponed publication of proposals that would revolutionise the university’s admissions system by quashing the rights of applicants to apply to individual colleges.

Oxford colleges have bypassed admissions procedures and accepted candidates who have been rejected by other colleges after being informally contacted by the applicants themselves. The disclosure, contained in documents obtained by The Oxford Student under the Freedom of Information Act, comes in advice issued to admissions tutors by the Oxford Colleges Admission Office in November 2004.

Oxford University has failed to publish several reports on a website designed to introduce greater accountability to university courses. The University has failed to supply information to the TQI (Teaching Quality Information) website, despite repeated requests to do so.

The Jericho Tavern, birthplace of British bands Radiohead and Supergrass, is to reopen as a serious music venue after a decade as a ‘Scream’ pub. Former Oxford Brookes student Alex Shepherd is the driving force behind the renovation. He recalls how his time in Oxford coincided with the Jericho Tavern's heyday.

News: Balliol Summer Event In Financial Crisis

Balliol’s Summer Event has again been marred by rumours of management problems and poor ticket sales. The news will be a blow to organsiers, after an independent investigation criticised the handling of last year’s Ball, which was left with an £8,000 shortfall following similar problems.


News: Queen's Face Huge Rent Hike

Queen’s students will face massive rent rises from October if new proposals are accepted by the College’s governing body. JCR president Rebecca Patton this week emailed the JCR giving details of the rise of 9.4 per cent above Oxford’s Van Norden inflation rate, which is yet to be set for the forthcoming academic year.

News: Violent Crime On Increase

New figures released by Thames Valley Police suggest violent crime in Oxford is getting worse. Police recorded a twelve per cent increase in acts of violence last year, the equivalent of 800 more violent attacks.
