Oxford MPs Hang On To Student Seats

On the surface there were no real shocks in the Oxford constituencies last Thursday night, with both seats returning their current MPs to office. Evan Harris ensured the Liberal Democrats held Oxford West and Abingdon with a convincing 46.3 per cent of the vote, despite a 1.6 per cent swing towards the Conservatives candidate Amanda McLean However for Labour’s Andrew Smith in Oxford East, victory was less decisive.


News: Tories Take County Council From Labour

Oxfordshire County Council will now be under Conservative control after the party won an overwhelming majority in last week’s election. Conservative candidates won 43 out of the 74 seats.

Balliol’s Summer Event has once again been marred by financial troubles, despite a sudden surge in ticket sales last Saturday. The problems came after last year’s Summer Event was plagued by setbacks, including a shortfall of 150 tickets compounded by a lack of sponsorship, resulting in an £8,000 loss.

First years have been forced to move accommodation after their rooms were flooded during St Peter’s ‘Heavenly’ ball on Saturday night. At least two students have been placed in alternative living quarters after a bathtub on the top floor of the college’s New Block was left blocked with both taps running.

News: New rower hospitalised on Woodstock Road

A New College rower was taken to hospital following an assault by a motorist who was subsequently arrested. Harry Bulstrode, a clinical medic and member of this year’s Nephtys crew, was cycling to training in Godstow on Sunday evening when the incident took place on the Woodstock Road.


News: JCR Presidents abducted during Pembroke husts

Unsuspecting JCR Presidents were targeted in a kidnapping campaign last Sunday, as Pembroke JCR Presidential candidates sought to prove their vocational skills. The three husters were sent out by current JCR President Tristan deSouza under the instruction to find and kidnap, or seduce one of his counterparts. This was the final of three challenges set to test the qualities deSouza believes a good president should have.

News: Hilda’s bursar on prowl for thief who stole £3000 Finnish tapestry

The bursar of St Hilda’s College was the victim of a drunken prank in which a valuable tapestry with huge sentimental value was stolen from outside her office. The theft took place on Saturday evening, when the college was crowded with large numbers attending the finale of the Summer Arts Fest, but was not noticed until Dr Helevuo arrived at her office on Monday morning.

Tom Dale, a Student Union executive officer, has suggested to representatives across the university that there should be greater representation for black and ethnic-minority groups in the Student Union.
