Match Me If You Can

The three "contestants".

From left to right :

Vanessa St Hildas - First Year English

Vanessa is a bit of a romantic. She would easily fit into a pre-Raphaelite painting, where she would be found reclining on a chaise-longue in the cruel grip of a mysterious malady. Thoughtful and intense, she is happiest discussing English literature, of which her knowledge is endless although she’ll chat about anything.

Tom Teddy Hall - First Year History And Politics

Cheerful and outgoing, Tom is an extremely amicablechap who is nearly always charming and chivalrous. He is passionate about archery, recently commended for his accuracy in the match against the Tabs. Active in his JCR, he currently holds the post of Secretary and was on the Committee for the Teddy Hall Ball earlier thisterm. In addition to this, he is very skilled at punting, an indisputable benefit in Trinity Term.

Cemile - Rejected Wadham - First Year Law

Representing Wadham, this stylish lady has three conditions in mind when scrutinizing potential male dates: her men must be funny, understanding and handsome. Sensible and independent in nature, her ideal date would be, “something exciting, but the person and the link with them is more important."

Tom and Vanessa on their date.

Tom and Vanessa on their date.

For once well-organised and, remarkably, not delayed by illness or exams, the date went ahead exactly as planned. Vanessa was the first to break the ice and conversation flowed happily. Tom ordered a lager, while Vanessa enjoyed a vodka and coke. Different drinks, different needs. Tom was struck by how cultured his prospective date was.

“She projected a literary air, which is funny really, as she’s studying English,” he said, adding: “She is extremely passionate about what she does leading to discussions about literature, music, art, all the things you should talk about”. It was not all serious though, “She seemed like a funny girl,” he quipped. She looks like she would be a good dancer.

We recommend Flashdance mixed with a bit of MC Hammer s**t: “She’s my usual type, she’s a short brunette, but she’s more outgoing than the girls I usually go out with.” Vanessa in turn commented that he was, “very charming, and has a marvellous haircut.” On the prospect of rejection, she said: “I’ll seek consolation in a depressing book."

However, she also cheerily added that she would not be downhearted for long if she were to lose her chance with Tom, as there are plenty more fish in the proverbial: “I’m not that picky about men " I’ll have anything.” If all doesn’t go well, though, she’ll have to find a new method of finding romance, as she denies that she would ever try blind-dating again: “The most traumatic experience of my life,” she declared.

Cemile’s half-hour with Tom did not go so swimmingly, however, as they did not find conversation came easily. “She seemed nice and friendly,” he remarked, “and we had some common acquaintances which we talked about.” Cemile said that Tom seemed quite confident, yet the conversation didn’t get much further than the frustrations of being left-handed.

Unfortunately, she felt he was not her usual type and it certainly seemed apparent that there was no spark between these two whatsoever, so it was not surprising when Tom chose to take Vanessa to dinner. During dinner at Quod on the High Street, the two seemed to get along very well and el vino did flow. Sadly, although it had looked promising to begin with, no romance blossomed between Vanessa and Tom. They have, as usual, decided to remain friends.
