Christ Church bops banned after Teddy Hall rampage
Students were found “bathing” in the Mercury Fountain
Christ Church JCR has been temporarily banned from holding bops, after students caused mayhem at last Friday’s event. Around 40 students from St Edmund Hall gatecrashed the eighties- themed event, held in the JCR. After the bop, porters were called to Tom Quad where five Teddy Hall students had jumped into the famous ’Mercury’ fountain. Porters were threatened with physical violence by one student when they arrived at the scene.
When asked to leave the college, another refused and was heard to tell the Porter, “I pay your wages.” Christ Church first year Olivia Nairn, also reported that her bag was stolen during the events. The college will not be holding any more bops until further notice. Dr Belinda Jack, Junior Censor at Christ Church told this paper, “They will be suspended until we find out who threatened our porter with physical violence. The students are allegedly not from Christ Church.
JCR President Will Dorsey said,“It’s irritating that Christ Church students have to suffer because of the actions of students at other colleges.” He is currently negotiating with college authorities to have the bops reinstated. Plans are being discussed to limit the number of guests who will be able to attend, and to request advance notice of the names of guests. Dorsey said, “We already had increasingly onerous restrictions placed on us as a result of past misbehaviour.
According to Jack, the JCR was left in a “disappointing state”. Rennovations to the room had only finished that lunctime. St Edmund Hall JCR Vice President Robin Fellerman said, “I am aware of a number of St. Edmund Hall students being found in Christ Church fountain last Saturday night. The issue is being resolved directly with Christ Church. We do not believe that members of St. Edmund Hall were involved in any other incident at Christ Church on the night in question.
Friday’s incident was not the first time this year that the JCR was censured following a bop. Belinda Jack said, “The first bop earlier this year was shambolic.” The ban at Christ Church is the latest in a series of college clampdowns on drunken behaviour at bops. Last term St Anne’s bops were restricted to one a term after complaints, and St John’s suspended the events after squash courts, a table tennis room and other areas of college were vandalised.
