Cash, smash and bloody kebab
A New College student seriously injured his hand last Sunday after smashing a window of Lincoln’s JCR. The student left a trail of blood down Turl Street as he proceeded to withdraw cash and buy a kebab, before he was rushed to Accident and Emergency by the police. The middle of the three Turl Street cashpoints was splattered with blood for three days before it was cleaned on Wednesday. The keypad, screen, and surrounding areas were covered in congealed blood.
The blood came from Rob Jamieson, an undergraduate at New College. Jamieson, who is currently rusticated, broke the window early on Sunday morning. Hannah Quincey was clearing up after the Lincoln Ball when she heard the window shatter. “After hearing the window break I ran out of college and down to Broad Street”, she said. She found Jamieson at Hassan’s kebab van eating a kebab.
“His hand was liquid red,” she said, “there was so much blood dripping down onto the pavement as he ate his kebab.” Quincey, Lincoln Ball President, said that Jamieson was “clearly absolutely intoxicated”. Alfie Stroud, a first year at Lincoln, was at Hassan’s kebab van when Jamieson arrived. He said that Jamieson calmly ordered his food and then ate it as blood gushed from his hand.
“We saw that one of the cash machines was covered in blood, so he must have withdrawn some cash to buy his kebab.” By this time Quincey had run back to Lincoln to alert the porters that Jamieson was on Broad Street. The night porter found him at Hassan’s and escorted him back to Lincoln Porter’s lodge, where he gave him first aid to stem the bleeding. The police arrived soon after and drove Jamieson to A&E at the John Radcliffe.
A Lincoln porter said he thought the window had been deliberately smashed: “The window is quite high up so it would be very difficult to accidentally smash it.” A police spokeswoman said that Jamieson was not currently under investigation. The matter is being dealt with by the Deans of Lincoln and New College. Dr Michael Burden, the Dean of New College, said, “The matter is under investigation. We take these actions very seriously.
Mr Hassan said that he served Jamieson chips, cheese, and chicken. When asked how much Jamieson had been bleeding, Mr Hassan replied, “Oh, normal.”
