Casual clothing banned from ChCh Tom Quad lawn

By Hannah Kuchler

Christ Church students have been told they are allowed to walk on the grass of Tom Quad this Trinity, but only while wearing sub fusc, and only after Formal Hall.

The rule dates back to an archaic passage on page 24 of the Junior Censors’ ‘blue book’. Belinda Jack, Christ Church Junior Censor, confirmed, “The rule is an old one which lapsed, but which has now been reinstated.” A number of Christ Church students have, however, expressed concern over the ancient rule.

Tat Seng Chiam, the JCR Accommodation and Environment Officer, told The Oxford Student, “I think the rule should be changed, but change isn’t always what we’re renowned for. At some point this term, there may be a JCR motion to change this rule.” He continued, “I have only ever walked across the quad in formal wear. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed it, but I did like the convenience.

More people are taking advantage of this opportunity compared to last year, as it wasn’t advertised then.” Athel Hodge, a second-year classicist at Christ Church, said, “I strongly believe this is wrong. It’s the best quad in the city, and we really don’t want people walking on it.
