Balliol students make citizen’s arrest

By William Breame

A Wadham student has been arrested after stealing a DVD player from Balliol JCR during a Charity pub crawl. The suspect escaped, only to be caught minutes later when two Balliol students, Will Sharp and Henry Moore, overheard him boasting about the theft on Holywell Street. Henry More said, “It didn’t take a genius to work it out. Will put on his best East London accent and scared the shit out of him.

He looked fairly unsure of himself and couldn’t work out if we were going to smack him or not.” Will Sharpe said, “I gave him some textbook chat straight from the ghetto. We made him walk with us to show us where he had hidden the DVD Player and then made him carry it back to Balliol with us. He hid it under some fence near the science buildings where they are doing work. The first thing I did afterwards was phone my Mum.

She was proud - I'm the hero of the hour” More said, “I can’t believe he let two mugs like us frogmarch him to Balliol. He should have run. With our levels of fitness he wouldn’t have even broken into a sweat.” Sharpe, who is currently Balliol entz rep, added, “If he had gotten away we would have had to justify why we hadn’t locked the DVD player away to the JCR committee.

Toby Shergold, spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said, “The suspect was apprehended by members of the public and subsequently arrested by Police. He was held overnight and questioned the next day. He has admitted the offence and been given a fixed penalty notice of £80.” The suspect, a first year Chemistry student from Wadham whom The Oxford Student has decided not to name, was taken into custody by the police.

Toby Shergold, spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said, “He was held overnight and questioned the next day. He admitted to the offence and has been given a fixed penalty notice of £80.” Kat Matfield, a Balliol second year who was in the bar at the time of the theft, told The Oxford Student, “Basically they were being drunken arseholes. They started yelling at the library and then at the people inside”.

Sarah Savage, Wadham’s JCR Entz officer, defended the intentions of the charity pub crawl, “It’s all a big misunderstanding. The bar was busy and there was a good atmosphere, but they weren’t giving us much. Apart from the slight mishap, it was a great success” Wadham’s Charity officer, Una Brogan, said “People don’t normally get arrested on RAG events. The event was very successful.

Henry Moore, a second year History and Politics student, “All we knew from the Porters was that the DVD player had been stolen and he [the suspect] was wearing a light blue t-shirt.” Will Sharp, a second year PPE student and Balliol JCR Entz rep said, “We saw these lads chatting on the corner and one was wearing a blue t-shirt and we heard his mate go ‘you should've seen it, he jumped right out the window’.” Henry continued, “It didn’t take a genius to work it out.

The DVD player was stolen by one of the three-legged pub-crawlers at a Raise and Give “Fairies and Cowboys” charity event run jointly by Wadham, Hertford, and Brasenose. Kat Matfield, the Balliol JCR Welfare Officer, was in the bar at the Balliol time, said, “Basically they were being drunken arseholes. They started yelling at the library and then at the people inside”. Sarah Savage, Wadham’s JCR Entz officer, said, “It’s all a big misunderstanding.

Apart from the slight mishap, it was a great success” Wadham’s Charity officer, Una Brogan, said “People don’t normally get arrested on RAG events. The event was very successful, and we raised around £230” Agnish Ray, an English and Spanish first year, said, “The bar crawl was a success. I had a great time."
