Pick of the Week: Belle & Sebastian

Write About Love

4/5

Belle & Sebastian remain for many a byword for all that is right with popular indie music. Listening to this album, it’s easy to see why. This album doesn’t just pick up where The Life Pursuit left off: it reflects the sound they developed cumulatively in their preceding six albums.

The inclusion of a duet with Norah Jones led to some furrowed brows, but ‘Little Lou…’ is masterful, blending their obscure yet profound lyricism with the new dynamic of Jones’ voice. One standout track is the penultimate ‘I Can See Your Future’, which typifies their ability to tread a middle ground between wistful and anthemic – a tradition drawing back to 1996’s If You’re Feeling Sinister.

Popular without being populist, and familiar yet innovative, Write About Love will no doubt prove a success with fans both old and new.
